逐句解 Line by line
The Six Sages said, "Has the eldest brother forgotten? This is the Mountain of Tumbled Rocks, and below it lies the Green Wave Pool, the dragon palace of the Myriad Sage."
The attribution and its unclosed quotation are folded forward into what they open — seven graphs, under the threshold of nine. 間 at 此間 stands at jiān by the corpus-wide ruling and 石 at shí. 六聖 counts the brothers without Erlang, where Pilgrim's 七聖 counted them with him.
Erlang said in surprise, "The old Myriad Sage dragon was never one to make trouble. How should he dare steal a pagoda's treasure?"
No graph in this segment stands in any guard roster. 不 takes bù before the level 生 shēng. 驚訝 is genuine surprise and not a formula, and it is the first unguarded reaction anyone has had in three passages of ceremony.
It is the six brothers who answer, not Pilgrim, and what they supply is a place-name. They know the mountain and they know what is under it, which means the hunting party has been through this country before and that the dragon palace is a local landmark rather than a discovery.
Erlang's surprise is the most informative thing said about the old dragon in the whole chapter. He knew him, and he did not think him the sort to make trouble. That verdict arrives ten passages after the same dragon's head was beaten to a pulp on the bank of his own pool, and nobody present mentions the fact.
The two counts sit side by side: Pilgrim called them 七聖, seven, including Erlang in the brotherhood; the brothers call themselves 六聖, six, and leave him out of it. Neither is wrong, and the difference is exactly the difference between how Pilgrim wants the relation described and how the household actually reckons it.
