葫蘆還孫 The Gourd Is Surnamed Sun Again
Line by line
Pilgrim, holding the gourd aloft, his eyes never turning from them, watched the two of them passing cups left and right, wholly off their guard — and he slipped the gourd into his sleeve. Plucking a hair, he made a false gourd, exactly alike with no second difference, and cradled it in his hands.
眼不轉睛 (yǎn bù zhuǎn jīng), "eyes never turning." 把個葫蘆揌入衣袖 (bǎ gè hú lu sāi rù yī xiù), "slipped the gourd into his sleeve." 一樣無二 (yí yàng wú èr), "exactly alike, with no second difference" — the counterfeit indistinguishable from the true.
That fiend, having passed the wine a while, did not look to tell true from false either, and took the treasure back with one grab. Each went up to his seat and sat down at ease, drinking on as before. The Great Sage drew back and slipped away; and having got the treasure, he rejoiced in his heart: “Grant that this demon lord has his powers — in the end the gourd is surnamed Sun.”
一把接過寶貝 (yì bǎ jiē guò bǎo bèi), "took the treasure back with one grab" — the fiend receiving the counterfeit unawares. 畢竟葫蘆還姓孫 (bì jìng hú lu hái xìng sūn), "in the end the gourd is surnamed Sun" — 還 read hái, still; Wukong's triumphant refrain.
In the end, there is no knowing how, thereafter, he would set to work, and by what means he would save his master and destroy the fiends; and so, give ear to the explanation in the coming chapter.
怎麼施為 (zěn me shī wéi), "how he would set to work" — 為 read wéi, to act. 方得救師滅怪 (fāng dé jiù shī miè guài), "and by what means save his master and destroy the fiends" — 得 read dé. 且聽下回分解 (qiě tīng xià huí fēn jiě), "give ear to the explanation in the coming chapter" — the formulaic close.
The chapter ends as it has run throughout, on a swindle worked in plain sight through the enemy's own distraction. The brothers' toast has freed the gourd into Wukong's hands, and their absorption in each other's courtesies gives him the unwatched moment to pocket the real vessel and cradle a hair-made copy in its place. The second fiend, still deep in his wine, takes back the counterfeit with a single careless grab — 也不看真假, not troubling to tell true from false — the same fatal inattention that has cost the demons every round.
Wukong's closing refrain, 畢竟葫蘆還姓孫, is the chapter's triumphant signature and the seal on its governing theme: for all the demon's genuine powers — and the second fiend, unlike his gulled mother, was a real match in arms — the treasures obey their true master in the end, and cunning outlasts strength. The formulaic close then opens the door to the sequel: the captives are still bound, the fiends still hold the field, and the gourd, now Sun's, is one weapon in a reckoning yet to come. The Great Sage has won the round of 騰挪; the war for master and disciples awaits the next chapter's telling.
