The Hairs Recalled

Amid their clamor the Great Sage Sun, up in mid-air, heard it all distinctly and saw it all plainly. Fearing that if they trifled too long some word would leak at the critical point, he gave his body a shake and recalled to himself the hairs that had been transformed into gourds — leaving those two fiends with four hands holding nothing at all.
走了風汛 (zǒu le fēng xùn), "the wind-tidings leak out" — news escaping like a draft. 將身一抖 (jiāng shēn yì dǒu), "gave his body a shake": the recall-gesture for transformed hairs. 四手皆空 (sì shǒu jiē kōng), "four hands all empty" — the narrator counts the imps by their hands.

Fine-and-Keen said: “Brother, hand me the gourd.” Clever-Bug said: “You were holding it.” “Heavens! How has it vanished?” They groped over the ground and rummaged the grass, plumbed their sleeves and felt about their waists — where was it to be had?
拿著 (ná zhe), durative zhe: "you were the one holding it." 揣腰間 (chuāi yāo jiān), "felt inside the waistband" — 揣 read chuāi, to grope within clothing. 那裡得有 (nǎ lǐ dé yǒu), rhetorical: "where could there possibly be any?”
總評 Commentary
The narrator's cut to mid-air reframes the entire preceding farce: every failed toss was performed under audit. Wukong's motive for ending the show is tactical, not merciful — 緊要處走了風汛, the fear that a leak at the critical point would spoil the larger game against the masters rather than the servants. The recall of the hairs is a single shake of the body, the most economical gesture in his repertoire.
What follows is pure physical comedy timed like theater: the demand, the denial, the cry to Heaven, then the frantic inventory of ground, grass, sleeve, and waistband. The idiom 四手皆空 — four hands, all empty — is the narrator's dry arithmetic, reducing two named characters to a futile total of grasping limbs.
