The Great Sage, scrabbling about at the foot of the pillar, suddenly startled Bajie. That idiot, hanging from the beam, laughed ha-ha: “Brother! So the ears won't get eaten after all.” Pilgrim said: “Idiot — are you hanging comfortably? I'll be out this minute, and I'll surely save the lot of you.”

Bajie said: “For shame, for shame! Can't get loose yourself, yet still think of saving others. So be it, so be it — master and disciples will all die together in one place, and it'll be good company asking the road in the world below.” Pilgrim said: “Don't talk rubbish — watch me get out.” Bajie said: “I'll watch how you get out.”

總評 Commentary

The reunion at the pillar is comedy of fraternal needling in the party's darkest strait. Bajie, still trussed and now vindicated — the ears are safe because Wukong is caught too — cannot resist crowing, and his sardonic vision of the whole party dying together for “company asking the road in the underworld” is gallows-humor of a peculiarly Bajie flavor: defeatist, self-pitying, and grimly funny. His taunt “I'll watch how you get out” sets the challenge the passage will answer.

Beneath the banter, the narrator quietly arms the escape: 眼裡卻抹著那兩個妖怪, while his mouth trades jibes his eyes are casing the demons. The double action — voice engaged with Bajie, gaze fixed on the guards — is the trickster's habitual doubleness, the performance of helplessness masking the calculation of opportunity. Wukong lets Bajie mock him precisely because the mockery is cover; the Great Sage is never more dangerous than when he appears most thoroughly bound.
