鬆繩反扣 The Cord Loosed and Turned

Now that demon lord had a Cord-Tightening Spell and a Cord-Loosening Spell. If the cord bound a stranger, he chanted the Cord-Tightening Spell, and there was no getting free; if it bound one of his own kind, he chanted the Cord-Loosening Spell, and it could not harm the body.

緊繩咒／鬆繩咒 (jǐn shéng zhòu / sōng shéng zhòu), the Cord-Tightening and Cord-Loosening spells. 莫能得脫 (mò néng dé tuō), "no getting free" — 得 the attainment dé; likewise 不得傷身 (bù dé shāng shēn), "cannot harm the body.”

He recognized it as his own treasure, and at once chanted the Cord-Loosening Spell, worked the cord slack, and slipped free — then flung it back at Pilgrim instead, and in a trice it had bound the Great Sage fast. The Great Sage was just about to work his Body-Slimming Method and slip his bonds, when the fiend chanted the Cord-Tightening Spell, and it clamped him tight — how could he get free?

他認得 (tā rèn de), "he recognized" — the vernacular de; but 怎能得脫 (zěn néng dé tuō), "how get free," attainment dé. 反望行者拋將去 (fǎn wàng xíng zhě pāo jiāng qù), "flung it back at Pilgrim" — 將 the motion-particle.

總評 Commentary

Here the proverb of the last passage — a thing follows its master — comes home with a vengeance. The gold-glinting cord, being the demon's own, answers to his spells and not to Wukong's grip: the fiend loosens it with a word, slips the noose, and turns the Great Sage's own capture back upon him. The reversal is exact poetic justice, the stolen weapon betraying the thief precisely as the maxim warned.

The mechanism is spelled out with a folklorist's precision — two spells, one to bind strangers, one to spare kin — so that the cord's loyalty to its owner is a rule the narrative has established and now enforces. Wukong's counter, the Body-Slimming Method by which he has escaped a hundred bonds, meets its match in the Tightening Spell; for once his repertoire of tricks is checked by a treasure that knows its true master, and the trickster is trussed by the very thing he had thought his prize.
