Now think — being only a single hair transformed, how much could it weigh? The wind atop the peak carried it off, drifting and swaying, and a full half-hour passed before it came down.

能有多重 (néng yǒu duō zhòng), “how heavy could it be,” read zhòng. 飄飄蕩蕩 (piāo piāo dàng dàng), “drifting and swaying.” The gourd's lightness buys the time the trick needs.

Then, above the Southern Gate of Heaven, Prince Nezha snapped open the black-eagle banner with a flap and shut sun, moon, and stars all away.

撥喇喇 (bō lā lā), an onomatopoeic “with a flapping snap.” 俱遮閉 (jù zhē bì), “veiled and shut away entirely.” The banner counterfeits the bottling.

Truly, heaven and earth seemed dyed in ink, the whole cosmos steeped in indigo.

乾坤墨染 (qián kūn mò rǎn), “heaven-and-earth dyed with ink,” read qián. 宇宙靛裝 (yǔ zhòu diàn zhuāng), “the universe steeped in indigo dye” — the darkness total.

The two imps cried out in alarm: “A moment ago when we spoke it was barely noon — how has it turned to dusk already?”

只好向午 (zhǐ hǎo xiàng wǔ), “just about noon.” 黃昏 (huáng hūn), “dusk, nightfall.” The sudden dark astonishes them.

Pilgrim said: “With the sky bottled, you can't tell the hour — how could it not be dusk?”

不辨時候 (bù biàn shí hòu), “unable to distinguish the time of day.” Pilgrim's ready explanation turns the darkness into proof of his power.

“And why so utterly black?” Pilgrim said: “Sun, moon, and stars are all bottled inside, so there's no light without — how could it not be black?”

這等樣黑 (zhè děng yàng hēi), “this sort of blackness, so dark.” 外卻無光 (wài què wú guāng), “no light remaining outside.” Every question the imps raise, Pilgrim folds into the illusion.

總評 Commentary

The trick unfolds with beautiful economy. The decoy gourd, being only a hair, is so light that the mountain wind bears it aloft for half an hour — buying exactly the time the deception needs — and at the crucial moment Nezha snaps open the banner and shuts away sun, moon, and stars. The verse-like line, “heaven and earth dyed in ink, the cosmos steeped in indigo,” lends the counterfeit night a cosmic grandeur wildly out of proportion to its object: fooling two imps.

The comic engine is Pilgrim's improvised authority. Each alarmed question — why dusk at noon? why so black? — he answers with unassailable false logic: the sky is bottled, so time cannot be told and no light remains. The imps supply the questions; Pilgrim supplies the explanations; and the darkness, Heaven's own contribution, makes every explanation seem to check out. It is a masterclass in how a confederate, a prop, and a quick tongue can make the impossible self-evident.
