The fiend was fierce beyond measure: wielding his precious sword, its meteor-swift passes came rolling in, until Sha Monk, worn weak and hard put to parry, turned to flee.

At once the fiend pinned the staff fast, swung his great hand around, seized Sha Monk and clamped him under his left arm; with his right hand he plucked Tripitaka from the horse, hooked the baggage on his toe-tips, and, opening his mouth, gripped the horse's mane in his teeth; then, working a spell of snatching, he bore them all off on a gust of wind into the Lotus-Flower Cave, and cried in a great voice: “Brother!

總評 Commentary

Sha Monk, the last guardian, is overmatched in a few strokes: the fiend pins his staff, and in one continuous, almost octopus-like motion sweeps up the whole party — Sha Monk under one arm, Tripitaka off the horse in the other hand, the baggage hooked on his toes, the horse's mane gripped in his teeth. The catalogue of grasping limbs is grimly comic and wholly efficient, the physical image of a plan that has closed on its prey.

With a fetching-spell the demon carries them off on the wind to the Lotus-Flower Cave, the lair that will govern the rest of the episode, and hails his elder brother with his triumph. The passage completes the reversal begun when Pilgrim was pinned: the party that set out under Monkey's protection is now, all but the buried Great Sage, delivered whole into the enemy's hands.
