So the officers each carried their share, and followed the imperial progress to the monastery, where a high platform was raised and laid out neatly.

捧著 — carrying, holding. The last character is the light one that says the action is going on, read zhe; it is not the zhù of writing a book, which is what the bare chain gives. 鋪設 — to spread out and set up. Its first character is read pū, the verb of laying something out flat. Read pù it is a shop, which would make the sentence about a tidy storefront. 駕幸 is the formal word for an imperial visit — the carriage favouring a place with its presence.

The elder gave his orders as before: “Pigsy and Sha Monk, take the dragon-horse and see to the baggage;”

仍命 — ordered as before, ordered as usual. One character, and it says this arrangement is not new: it is what they have done every day for fourteen years. 行囊, the travelling bags. They are in a monastery in the capital with the journey over, and the luggage detail is unchanged.

行xíng者zhě在zài我wǒ左zuǒ右yòu。」 行xíng者zhě在zài我wǒ左zuǒ右yòu。」

“Monkey, stay at my left and right.”

Six characters, and they are the last order the Tang monk ever gives his disciples. 在我左右 — at my left and right. It is what he has said to Monkey at every dangerous place on the road. There is no danger here at all; he is standing in a temple in his own capital, surrounded by the imperial civil service. He says it anyway.

總評 Commentary

A high platform goes up in the monastery courtyard and is laid out neatly, and the officers of the Tang state stand round it with the canon in their hands.

Then the Tang monk gives his orders, and the word the novel chooses is as before — one character saying that this is simply what they do. Pigsy and Sha Monk take the horse and the bags; Monkey stays at his left and right.

It is the last order he ever gives them, and it is the one he has given at every dangerous place on the road. There is no danger here. He is on a platform in a temple in his own capital with the whole civil service watching, and he still wants Monkey where he can reach him.
