So the Great Sage, seeing his nature and clarifying his mind, turned to the Buddha's teaching; and the Bodhisattva, mindful and intent, went on to seek the holy monk.
見性明心 — “to see the nature and clarify the mind,” the Chan idiom for awakening. The paired closing line balances the converted monkey against the seeking bodhisattva.
總評 Commentary
The pact is sealed. Guanyin, hearing the monkey's repentance, promises to send the pilgrim who will free him, and the bargain is fixed: he will serve as a disciple in exchange for release. The chapter's whole project — to discipline rather than destroy the mind-monkey — is now formally agreed.
The matter of his name is a deft stroke of design. Wukong already bears the 悟 (“awakened”) of his first master Subhuti's lineage, and Guanyin delights that it accords with the 悟 of the two disciples she has already gathered, Wuneng and the future Wujing. The three converts are bound into a single generation by a shared character, the band unified before it is assembled.
Following Anthony C. Yu, the closing couplet — 那大聖見性明心歸佛教,這菩薩留情在意訪神僧 — sets the converted monkey beside the still-seeking bodhisattva, and so points the narrative forward. With Wukong won, only the pilgrim himself remains to be found, and the final passage turns east toward Chang'an to find him.
