The Bodhisattva led Moksa past this mountain and made again for the Eastern Land.

Moksa said: "Master, that place giving off the light is the Mountain of Five Phases, where the Tathāgata's sealing-talisman is set."

壓帖 is the paper seal, stamped with a spell, that holds Sun Wukong down. A slip of paper is doing the work of a mountain.

Mistress and disciple climbed the mountain together and looked at the talisman: it was the Six-Syllable Great Mantra, "Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ."

The seal turns out to be the Six-Syllable Mantra of Avalokiteśvara — 唵嘛呢叭𠺗吽, ǎn má ní bā mī hōng, Sanskrit oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ, the most recited phrase in Buddhism. The fifth character, 𠺗, is a rare one that stands where the usual would be and is read in its mantra role.

總評 Commentary

Guanyin arrives at the Mountain of Five Phases, where Sun Wukong has lain pinned since the end of the previous chapter. The glare that announces it, and Moksa's recognition of the seal, build toward the chapter's pivot: her first sight of the monkey she means to make chief disciple of the pilgrimage.

The seal turns out to be the Six-Syllable Mantra, 唵嘛呢叭𠺗吽 — Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ, the most widely recited invocation of Avalokiteśvara, which is to say of Guanyin herself. That her own mantra is the thing holding him down is richly apt: the formula of compassion doing duty as a lock. And she has now come in person to start turning that confinement into a release.

Yu notes how the moment ties the cosmological to the devotional. The Five Phases that the physical world is built from, the Buddha's seal, and the bodhisattva's mantra bear down together on one figure — Daoist, Buddhist and liturgical orders converging on the xīnyuán, the mind-monkey waiting underneath for his conversion.
