When Bajie and Sha Monk heard their master in such bitterness, they too all together lifted up their voices and wept.

放聲痛哭 is a set phrase and a loud one: to let the voice out and weep bitterly. It is public grief, not private.

Pilgrim laughed a little and said, "Master, set your mind at rest; brothers, stop crying. Whatever they may do, we shall certainly come to no harm.

微微笑, the faintest smile, against three people howling. The contrast is the whole characterisation, and the book makes it with two characters.

Once that old fiend has quieted down, we shall be on our way."

走路, take the road, is the ordinary phrase for setting off — as flat as saying they will head out. He is discussing a bound prisoner's travel plans in the tone of a man checking a timetable.

總評 Commentary

Three people are crying and one is smiling, and the arrangement tells you everything about who is actually in danger here.

Wukong's confidence is not bravado, and the reader knows it because the reader has watched him do this before. What is new is the audience. He is no longer reassuring a master who might believe him; he is reassuring two brothers who have just been beaten and a master who has just asked who will save his life.

It is also, quietly, a plan. Wait for the old fiend to settle, then leave. He has been tied up for less than a page and has already worked out the timing. Everything he says here will turn out to be true — and it will still not be enough, which is what makes the chapter interesting.
