But we tell now of Pilgrim, who from midnight on could give no more thought to the Tang Monk, and rode a cloud away and escaped.

卻說, but we tell of, is the storyteller picking up the thread he laid down at the end of the last stretch. It answers the 不題 a moment ago exactly. in 顧不得 is de: could not attend to.

He went straight to the Lion Camel Cave, and with one run of his cudgel cut down the ten thousand little demons there to the last of them.

萬數 is not a round rhetorical figure but the number the story has been using for that cave. 盡情勦絕, exterminated to the full, is four characters for a massacre, and the sentence gives it no more room than that.

huíláidōngfāngchū huíláidōngfāngchū

He hurried back, and the sun was up in the east.

Seven characters. A whole night has ended and a slaughter has been fitted into the gap between two sentences.

總評 Commentary

The thread break is formal and it matters. The storyteller has just shut the lid on the rumour and the iron chest, and he opens the new stretch with the matching phrase, so the reader knows exactly where the camera has moved.

What Wukong does with his night is the shock. He does not search for his master. He goes to the empty cave and kills everything in it, and the narrator spends nineteen characters on the killing and none at all on the reason.

It is grief with nowhere to go. He believes the master is in the city he cannot enter, and he has a night to fill, and he fills it with the only work he knows how to do. Then the sun comes up and he still has nothing.
