Excellent Great Sage! He changed so that there was nothing at all to choose between them, and mixed in through the golden gate.

一般無二 is identical, with not a second thing about it — the phrase for a copy you could not tell from the original. in 變得 is de, introducing how the changing turned out.

As he was walking along he saw Bajie tied to a pillar in front of the hall, groaning.

is the noise, not the word — a grunt of pain. Fifteen characters, and the sound arrives before the recognition.

Pilgrim went up close and called softly, "Wuneng."

He uses the religious name Guanyin gave Bajie — Awakened to Power — rather than the everyday Bajie. In this book the dharma name comes out when things are serious.

dāizirènshēngyīndào:「shīxiōngláilejiùjiù。」 dāizirènshēngyīndào:「shīxiōngláilejiùjiù。」

That idiot knew the voice, and said, "Brother, you have come? Save me, save me!"

認得 takes , the reading it has everywhere in this pair. And Bajie knows him by voice alone, through a flawless disguise, which is a small piece of characterisation for both of them.

總評 Commentary

The disguise is perfect and it does not matter. Bajie identifies him from one spoken name, because after eighty chapters on the road he knows what his brother sounds like.

Both of them reach for the dharma names at once. Wukong calls him Wuneng, which he almost never does, and gets called brother back. Two syllables of formality and then straight to save me.

It is worth pausing on what Wukong has come to do. He believes his master is dead. He has come into the palace anyway, in disguise, for the two who are left — and the first thing he will do is ask Bajie a question whose answer he already dreads.
