In a fluster the whole crowd of demons raised a shout together, all crying, "Take the Tang Monk! Take the Tang Monk quickly!"

慌得 with de again, the second time in three passages. The cry is doubled on the page, and the doubling is the sound of a crowd rather than a stammer this time.

This shout going up roused the whole lot of them, front and back, great and small, and they all came awake, and with swords and spears pressing close they came to the Gate of Correct Sunlight.

前前後後、大大小小 doubles two pairs in a row, which in this book means a crowd too large and too mixed to itemise. The search has become a mobilisation.

總評 Commentary

The alarm spreads and the writing spreads with it. One sentence ago the demons were three chiefs peering into a cold pot; now the text cannot list them and resorts to doubling — front and back, great and small.

Note where they go. Straight to the main gate, because that is where anyone leaving would leave. The demons are running the search competently and they are about to be defeated by their own competence, since the gate they run to is sealed and will tell them nobody came through.
