慎守寶葫 Guarding the Gourd

Zhu Bajie said: “Elder brother, take out that gourd of yours and let us have a look.

那葫蘆兒 — "that gourd," deictic 那 (nà), 兒 the suffix (er). Bajie’s curiosity sets up Wukong’s caution.

只zhǐ怕pà那nà二èr魔mó已yǐ化huà了le也yě。」只zhǐ怕pà那nà二èr魔mó已yǐ化huà了le也yě。」

I only fear the second fiend has melted away by now.”

只怕那二魔 — "only fear that second fiend," deictic 那 (nà).

The Great Sage first took down the Pure Vase, then drew out the Golden Cord and the fan, and last took the gourd in his hand and said: “Don’t look, don’t look.

先將…又將… — "first took… then took…," 將 the disposal marker (jiāng); 解下, "took down," 解 jiě; 葫蘆兒, 兒 the suffix (er).

Once before, he bottled Old Sun, and Old Sun rinsed his mouth and tricked him into lifting the lid, and so Old Sun got away.

哄得他揭開蓋子 — "tricked him into lifting the lid," first 得 the resultative complement de; 方得走了, "only then got away," the second 得 read dé ("manage to"). The two 得 in one line split by position.

So let us on no account lift the lid — I only fear he too knows some trick, and will get away.”

弄喧 (nòng xuān) — "work a ruse, make a commotion"; Wukong’s caution recalls his own earlier escape by the same means.

師shī徒tú們men喜xǐ喜xǐ歡huān歡huān，將jiāng他tā那nà洞dòng中zhōng的de米mǐ麵miàn菜cài蔬shū尋xún出chū，燒shāo刷shuā了le鍋guō灶zào，安ān排pái些xiē素sù齋zhāi吃chī了le。师shī徒tú们men喜xǐ喜xǐ欢huān欢huān，将jiāng他tā那nà洞dòng中zhōng的de米mǐ面miàn菜cài蔬shū寻xún出chū，烧shāo刷shuā了le锅guō灶zào，安ān排pái些xiē素sù斋zhāi吃chī了le。

Master and disciples, all delight, dug out the rice, flour, and greens from that cave’s stores, scoured out the pots and stove, and set about a vegetarian meal, and ate.

將他那洞中 — "from that cave," 將 the disposal marker (jiāng), 那 deictic (nà), 中 read zhōng.

飽bǎo餐cān一yí頓dùn，安ān寢qǐn洞dòng中zhōng，一yí夜yè無wú詞cí，早zǎo又yòu天tiān曉xiǎo。饱bǎo餐cān一yí顿dùn，安ān寝qǐn洞dòng中zhōng，一yí夜yè无wú词cí，早zǎo又yòu天tiān晓xiǎo。

Having eaten their fill, they slept soundly in the cave; the night passed without a word, and soon it was dawn again.

一夜無詞 — "a night without a word," a stock closing formula; 洞中, "in the cave," 中 read zhōng. The passage settles the pilgrims for the night.

總評 Commentary

The chapter’s action subsides into a domestic coda, but not before one last stroke of prudence. Bajie, ever curious, wants the gourd opened to see the melted fiend; Wukong refuses — and his reason is pointed self-knowledge. He himself once escaped this very gourd by rinsing his mouth and tricking his captor into lifting the lid, and he will not risk the same with the bottled Silver-Horn.

The refusal caps the chapter’s long play with the name-and-answer vessels: the trickster who has bottled others guards against being outwitted in turn. With that, the pilgrims fall to a vegetarian meal from the demons’ own stores and sleep the night through — "a night without a word" — the formulaic hush that closes the episode and readies the next, when the elder fiend will seek aid at the Coiled-Dragon Cave.
