敗魔釋徒 The Fiend Routed, the Pilgrims Freed

The old fiend and the Great Sage had fought some thirty or forty bouts; the day was drawing toward evening, and, unable to hold his ground, he broke and fled the field;

天將晚矣 — "the day was about to grow late," 將 the adverbial jiāng ("about to"). 抗敵不住, "could not withstand [him]."

徑jìng往wǎng西xī南nán上shàng，投tóu奔bèn壓yā龍lóng洞dòng去qù不bù題tí。径jìng往wǎng西xī南nán上shàng，投tóu奔bèn压yā龙lóng洞dòng去qù不bù题tí。

and he made straight for the south-west, fleeing to the Coiled-Dragon Cave — of which no more.

壓龍洞 (Yālóng Dòng) — the Coiled-Dragon Cave; 去不題, "went — [we] say no more of it," a narrator’s transition. The name plants the setting for the arc’s next turn.

The Great Sage now brought his cloud down, burst into the Lotus-Flower Cave, and untied the Tang Monk, Bajie, and Sha the Monk.

解下 (jiě xià) — "untied [them] down," 解 read jiě; 沙和尚, "Sha the Monk," 和 read hé (和尚, a monk).

他tā三sān人rén脫tuō得de災zāi危wēi，謝xiè了le行xíng者zhě，卻què問wèn：「妖yāo魔mó那nǎ裡lǐ去qù了le？」他tā三sān人rén脱tuō得de灾zāi危wēi，谢xiè了le行xíng者zhě，却què问wèn：「妖yāo魔mó那nǎ里lǐ去qù了le？」

The three of them, delivered from danger, thanked Pilgrim, and then asked: “Where has the fiend gone?”

脫得災危 — "escaped the peril," 得 the resultative complement de. 那裡去了, "gone where," 那 interrogative nǎ.

行xíng者zhě道dào：「二èr魔mó已yǐ裝zhuāng在zài葫hú蘆lú裡lǐ，想xiǎng是shì這zhè會huì子zi已yǐ化huà了le。行xíng者zhě道dào：「二èr魔mó已yǐ装zhuāng在zài葫hú芦lú里lǐ，想xiǎng是shì这zhè会huì子zi已yǐ化huà了le。

Pilgrim said: “The second fiend is already bottled in the gourd — by now, I should think, he’s melted away.

Wukong opens his account of what has passed. 這會子, "by this time," 子 the suffix (zi).

總評 Commentary

The battle resolves and the rescue is at last accomplished. Worn down through thirty or forty bouts and overtaken by dusk, the old fiend breaks and flees to the Coiled-Dragon Cave — a name that quietly seeds the arc’s next movement. Wukong, freed of his adversary, comes down and cuts the pilgrims loose.

The freed travellers’ first question — where has the fiend gone? — turns the passage from action to recounting. Wukong begins to tell what has happened, starting with the second fiend, bottled and by now surely melted. The scene shifts register from combat to the companionable after-math, in which the tale of the whole episode will be told over.
