小可, a trifling thing. 滅得 turns on whether it is possible, so is the light toneless de. He brushes the offering aside in four characters and asks the only question he has asked anybody in this chapter.

The Local Spirit said, 'To put out the fire you must beg the banana-leaf fan of the Rākṣasī.'

須求, must petition. The spirit gives him the same answer the cake-seller gave in the road, almost word for word, which is either unhelpful or a setup for what comes next.

'The more that fire is fanned the more it burns. How is that?'

越搧越著, "the more one fans it the more it catches" — is again the catching zháo, its third appearance in a short stretch after 更著百倍 and 燒著身體. 何也 closes in bookish literary Chinese.

The Local Spirit looked at it and said with a smile, 'This fan is not the true one. She has tricked you.'

The revelation takes eleven characters and is delivered with a smile. 被他哄了 uses the same verb Pilgrim used of himself two passages ago — 被那廝哄了 — so we hear his own diagnosis confirmed rather than a revelation sprung on him. The source's carries no gender in this period; it is the Rākṣasī who is meant.

Pilgrim said, 'Then how am I to get the true one?'

方得 takes as the of achieving something. Nine characters, and it is the question the next chapter exists to answer.

總評 Commentary

吃齋小可 — eating is a small matter. Pilgrim brushes the offering aside in four characters and asks the only question he has put to anybody in this chapter: when can the fire be put out so my master can pass. He has asked it of a cake-seller, of a farmer, of a woodcutter, of a Bodhisattva, and of the demon herself.

The Local Spirit's first answer is useless — beg the fan of the Rākṣasī — and Pilgrim's reply is to pick up off the roadside the thing he threw down in disgust and hold it out. 這不是? Is this not it? Then the complaint: 越搧越著, the more it is fanned the more it burns.

土地看了笑道 — he looked at it and said with a smile. Eleven characters settle what the whole second half of the chapter has been building: 此扇不是真的被他哄了. The verb is the one Pilgrim used of himself two passages earlier, so we hear his own guess confirmed rather than a revelation delivered.

And the question that follows — 如何方得真的, how then am I to get the true one — is the hinge. The chapter ends here in substance; what remains is a single couplet naming the person who has it.
