Line by line
And with that he planted his foot downward.
把腳往下一登, one stamp of the foot downward. Eight characters of narration following a speech, which is why it stands by itself — and it is the first beat of a two-beat comic structure.
The Rākṣasī's lower belly was seized with pain past bearing. She sat down on the ground and cried out in agony.
難禁, hard to endure; 禁 is jìn. 坐於地下 uses the literary 於, which sits oddly against the plain speech around it and gives the sentence a formal deadpan.
Pilgrim said, 'Sister-in-law, don't refuse me — let me send you down a pastry to stay your hunger.'
休得推辭, "do not decline," is the formula a host uses when pressing food on a guest. 點心 is a small something to eat. He is now conducting the entire assault in the vocabulary of hospitality.
And he butted his head upward.
把頭往上一頂, one thrust of the head upward. Seven characters, the second beat, and the balance with 往下一登 is exact — down with the foot, up with the head.
The Rākṣasī's heart was in pain past bearing. She could only roll about on the ground, and the pain turned her face yellow and her lips white, till she could only call out, 'Uncle Sun, spare my life!'
疼得 uses 得 to attach a degree, so the light toneless de. 孫叔叔, "Uncle Sun" — she concedes the invented kinship at last, and in the senior form he awarded himself when he reached for the cudgel.
Two beats, exactly parallel: 把腳往下一登, one stamp of the foot downward, and 把頭往上一頂, one thrust of the head upward. Eight characters and seven, each its own sentence, each following a line of mock-hospitality. The structure is a comedian's, and the source builds it deliberately.
What sits between them is the offer of a pastry to stay her hunger, and 休得推辭, do not decline — the formula a host presses on a guest who is refusing a third helping. The chapter has been full of genuine hospitality: the farmer's tea and rice, the cake circulating as a courtesy, Lingji's regret that he cannot keep his visitor longer. Here the same language is turned into an instrument.
The result is that we are asked to laugh at a woman rolling on the ground with her face gone yellow and her lips white. The novel does not soften it and does not apologise for it, and the discomfort is real: this is the mother whose grievance the chapter took seriously not long ago.
Her surrender is 孫叔叔饒命 — Uncle Sun, spare my life. She concedes the invented kinship at last, and in the senior form Pilgrim awarded himself when he gave up arguing for it and reached for the cudgel. The relationship he could not establish by persuasion he has established by force, and the form of address is the proof.
