藏風山凹 The Wind-Sheltered Hollow

The Pilgrim said, "Worthy brother, set the luggage down in some wind-sheltered hollow of the mountain, turn the horse loose, and do not show your head.

藏風山凹 takes 藏 as cáng, "to shelter, to store away" — a hollow where the wind is kept off. On a ridge whose demon rules the wind, and beside a cave containing a Wind-Stilling Post, the name is not idle. 將行李歇在 takes the handling marker 將, jiāng.

等děng老lǎo孫sūn去qù他tā門mén首shǒu與yǔ他tā賭dǔ鬥dòu，必bì須xū拿ná住zhù妖yāo精jīng，方fāng才cái救jiù得dé師shī父fù。」等děng老lǎo孙sūn去qù他tā门mén首shǒu与yǔ他tā赌dǔ斗dòu，必bì须xū拿ná住zhù妖yāo精jīng，方fāng才cái救jiù得dé师shī父fù。」

Let Old Monkey go to his gate and give him battle. Only when the fiend is taken can our master be saved."

方才救得師父: the "can be done" 得, dé. The Pilgrim's plan is the one he always has — take the fiend, and the hostage follows.

八bā戒jiè道dào：「不bù消xiāo吩fēn咐fu，請qǐng快kuài去qù。」八bā戒jiè道dào：「不bù消xiāo吩fēn咐fu，请qǐng快kuài去qù。」

Bajie said, "There is no need to instruct me. Go, and go quickly."

不消吩咐, "no need to give orders." Bajie has been told to hide and does not argue; but the four characters are not quite obedient, and the pig who charged the tiger has just been assigned to mind the luggage.

總評 Commentary

Fifty-nine characters of disposition before battle, and the Pilgrim issues them as orders. Bajie is to stow the luggage, loose the horse and keep out of sight; the Great Sage will do the fighting. In the last passage but one it was Bajie who threw down the load and charged a tiger while his brother stood by the road.

Note the place-name. 藏風山凹, the hollow that shelters from the wind, with 藏 read cáng and used of a hiding-place. This chapter's demon commands a wind; his cave holds a 定風樁, a post that stills wind; and the pig is sent to sit in a fold of ground that wind cannot reach. The whole geography of Yellow Wind Ridge is an argument about what can and cannot be sheltered from.
