逐句解 Line by line
"You have provoked that fiend till her lust is up, and now she will lay on meat or plain regardless and is set on coupling with me. How is this thing to end?"
Three readings. 得 is de, the light syllable hooking a verb to the state it produced — provoked-to-the-point-that. 那 is nǎ in the rhetorical question about the catering. And the closing 了 is liǎo, the full verb meaning to finish or settle, not the light le that marks a completed action — how is this to be brought to an end.
Pilgrim, laughing along in the dark, said, "Master, do not be angry. There is a way to save you."
陪笑 is to laugh in accompaniment, the placating laugh of somebody in the wrong. It is a very precise social word and it is exactly what he is doing.
The Tang Monk said, "How is there any saving me?"
Again 那 is nǎ, the questioning reading, and the sense is rhetorical despair rather than a real enquiry. In 救得我 the 得 is dé, the full reading that lets the verb take its object.
Tripitaka's complaint is the sharpest analysis anyone offers in the chapter. The eagle did not rescue him; it removed the one thing protecting him, which was her wish to do the thing properly.
The reasoning is worth following. While she was performing a wedding she was bound by the forms of a wedding — vegetarian food, a matchmaker, bows, wine. Pilgrim broke the forms, and her response was to say that the food no longer matters. He has stripped the ceremony away and left the intention.
And Pilgrim laughs the placating laugh. He knows he is in the wrong and has a new plan ready, which is his usual combination.
