He knew his master was fond of the plain wine made from grapes, and told him to drink one cup of hers.

A small domestic detail that lands like a shock: Pilgrim knows what wine his master likes. Grape wine was a real and rather exotic drink in Ming China, associated with the western regions the pilgrimage is crossing. 素酒 is the unfortified, plain sort a monk might just about be forgiven.

The master, having no help for it, drank it off, and hurriedly filled the cup to the brim again and handed it back to the fiend.

The vow lasted four passages. 沒奈何 — nothing to be done — is the same phrase the narrator used when he first answered her, and it is doing the same excusing work. The speed of matters: he pours fast because Pilgrim told him to.

And sure enough the pouring raised a joy-flower on it.

The plan works on the first try. A 喜花兒 is the ring of bubbles thrown up by wine poured quickly, and the name is the whole point — joy-flower, a lucky sign, exactly what a bride wants to see on a wedding cup.

總評 Commentary

Tripitaka drinks. He swore a conditional oath about it, petitioned heaven about it, and now does it in nine characters with the excuse that there was nothing else to be done. The novel neither condemns nor defends him; it simply reports the order of events.

The grape wine is a lovely touch of characterisation by way of a detail nobody needed. Pilgrim has been travelling with this man for sixty-eight chapters and knows his preferences, and the knowledge surfaces in the middle of a rescue.

The bubble is the hinge of the whole sequence and it is pure physics. Pour fast, get foam. Ming custom read the foam as a good omen at a wedding, so the bride will be pleased to see it and will not look underneath — and underneath is where Pilgrim will be.
