The fiend actually made the exchange, and thought to herself with secret pleasure, "What a good monk he is! He really is a true man — we have not been husband and wife for a single day, and already he shows me this much affection."

Her delight is the cruellest thing in the chapter and the novel gives it to her straight. 真人 is a loaded word: in ordinary use it means a genuine, sincere person, but in Daoist writing it is a technical title for a Perfected One, an adept who has completed the work. She means the first. The narrator is allowing the second.

總評 Commentary

This is the passage that makes the chapter more than a comedy. She is not gloating over a captive; she is touched that he was kind to her. The novel spends thirteen characters on her happiness and then kills her for it.

The word she chooses for him carries a meaning she does not intend. A true man in ordinary speech is simply a sincere one — but in the Daoist vocabulary this chapter has been swimming in since its title, a Perfected One is an adept who has finished the work and cannot be robbed of his vital essence. She has named exactly the thing that is about to defeat her.

And she was right about the affection, in a way. He did give her the better peach.
