散心釋悶 A Heart Beaten Out of Iron

The whole party arrived outside the flower garden, and the fiend, in a soft flirtatious undertone, said, "Darling elder brother, amuse yourself here — it is a real cure for low spirits."

In 一行 the character 行 is xíng, because this is a party of people on the move rather than a row of anything. 俏語低聲 is coquettish speech in a low voice, and 散心釋悶 — scatter the heart, release the stifling — picks up the very words he used to ask for the outing. She is quoting him back to himself.

The Tang Monk went in with her hand in hand and arm in arm, raised his head and looked, and truly it was a fine place.

Here 相 is xiāng, the mutual reading — they support each other — and not the xiàng of form that the base reaches for. 去處 is simply a place, a spot, and the flatness of it sets up the extravagance that follows.

總評 Commentary

She repeats his own phrase back at him, which is either affection or the chapter being cruel. He invented an excuse; she has taken it seriously and is trying to make it come true.

And then the tone lifts and the garden opens. What follows is three hundred and forty-six characters of pure description, the longest set-piece in the chapter, and the reader should feel the machinery engage exactly as it did before the banquet.
