The Four Stalwart Generals tidied his quarters and saw him settled, and when the kowtows and bows were done, they all asked: 'In the hundred-odd years the Great Sage has been in heaven, what office did you really hold?'

The Great Sage said with a laugh: 'I remember it as scarcely half a year — how is it you speak of a hundred-odd years?'

jiànjiàngdào:「zàitiānzàixiàfāngnián。」 jiànjiàngdào:「zàitiānzàixiàfāngnián。」

The Generals said: 'One day in heaven is a year here below.'

在天一日,即在下方一年: one day in heaven equals a year in the mortal world — the chapter’s key to the gulf between celestial and earthly time.

The Great Sage said: 'It is my good fortune that the Jade Emperor took such a liking to me this time: he truly enthroned me as Great Sage Equal to Heaven, raised an Equal-to-Heaven residence, and set up two offices, Tranquillity and Spirit-Repose, each staffed with immortal clerks and guards. Later, seeing me idle, he set me to mind the Peach Garden. Lately, because the Queen Mother held the Grand Peach Feast and did not invite me, I did not wait for her invitation but went first to the Jade Pool, and her immortal viands and immortal wine I stole and ate, every one. Coming out of the Jade Pool, all a-stagger, I blundered into Lord Lao’s palace, and his five gourds of golden elixir I stole and ate as well. Then, fearing the Jade Emperor would charge me with the crime, I made my way out of the Heaven Gate just now.'

踉踉蹡蹡 (liàng liàng qiàng qiàng): staggering; 著我 = zhuó wǒ, causative "set me to."

The Great Sage drank a mouthful, then grimaced, baring his teeth, and said: 'Not good to drink, not good to drink.'

Beng and Ba, the two generals, said: 'In the Heavenly Palace the Great Sage drank immortal wine and ate immortal fare, and so the coconut wine is not much to his taste. As the saying goes: “Sweet or not, it’s the water of home.”'

Two folk-proverbs answer each other: 美不美,鄉中水 ("sweet or not, the water of home") and 親不親,故鄉人 ("kin or not, the folk of home").

None of you has ever tasted it; let me go and steal a few jars back, and each of you shall drink half a cup, and every one of you will be long-living and unaging.'

The Great Sage went out of the cave-mouth at once, turned another somersault, worked an invisibility spell, and went straight to the Peach Feast; entering the Jade Pool palace, he saw those few brewers, lees-workers, water-carriers, and fire-tenders still snoring, not yet awake.

He clamped two of the largest jars under his arms, left and right, carried two more in his hands, turned his cloud about and came back; gathering the monkeys in the cave, he held an immortal-wine feast, and each drank a few cups — and there we leave their merriment.

總評 Commentary

The homecoming turns on the chapter’s great structural joke — 在天一日,即在下方一年 ("one day in heaven is a year below"). What the 心猿 experienced as a careless half-year of feasting and theft has cost his followers a hundred-odd years of waiting. The disproportion is not merely comic; it is the temporal sign of the gulf the whole episode has dramatized. The mind that treated the eternal peaches as a snack lives, itself, at a tempo wholly out of joint with the order it has violated.

Monkey’s recital of his crimes — peaches, wine, elixir, all 偷吃了 — is delivered not as confession but as boast, and ends in the most telling gesture of the chapter: he proposes to steal again, now for his followers’ sake (待我再去偷他幾瓶回來…一個個也長生不老). The trading proverbs frame the theft as homely loyalty. In the reading this is the unrefined mind at its most seductive: it converts transgression into fellowship and offers stolen immortality as a gift — distributing, counterfeit, to the cave the deathlessness it could not earn for itself.
