定身赴池 The spell of stillness; off to Yaochi

The brave Great Sage, holding the magic sign and reciting a spell, said to the fairies: 'Halt! Halt! Halt!'
這原來是個定身法，把那七衣仙女，一個個睖睖睜睜，白著眼，都站在桃樹之下。

This, it turned out, was a body-fixing spell: it left the seven fairies each one staring stiff and blank, the whites of their eyes turned up, all standing rooted beneath the peach trees.
捻著 / 白著眼 read with zhe (the durative); the spell is the 定身法, recurring whenever Monkey freezes an opponent.

The Great Sage leapt onto a cloud, sprang out of the garden, and made straight along the road to the Jade Pool.

Denied a seat, the 心猿 answers exclusion with a small act of violence against witnesses: the 定身法, the body-fixing spell, leaving the seven fairies frozen and blank-eyed beneath the trees. It is a telling first use of power — not to create or to ascend, but to immobilize, to stop other beings in their tracks so the mind can move unobserved. The spell that "halts" others is the signature of a will that recognizes no order but its own motion.
The fairies left standing "rooted beneath the peach trees" (都站在桃樹之下) make a quiet emblem: the servants of heaven’s feast fixed in place beside the elixir-fruit, while the mind that should guard it speeds off to seize what was withheld. The lead-in 只見那壁廂 opens onto the next vision — the Barefoot Immortal, the true adept against whom the imposter is about to be measured.
