總評 Commentary

The lavishes the whole vocabulary of celestial splendour on the banquet hall — dragon-liver and phoenix-marrow, jade basins, cinnabar-cloud screens — only to close on one deflating line of prose: 卻還未有仙來 ("yet not an immortal had come"). The entire gorgeous apparatus of heaven’s feast stands ready and empty, its guests scattered on the 心猿’s false errand. The poem’s abundance is built precisely to be violated.

That the disguised mind enters in "the very likeness of the Barefoot Immortal" (赤腳大仙模樣) sharpens the alchemical irony. He wears the form of the true adept — the one the previous poem showed bearing the register "beyond birth and death" — but only as a costume for theft. The imposter walks the elixir-laden hall in the borrowed shape of authentic attainment, which is, in the reading, the counterfeit of cultivation: the outward semblance of the immortal without the inward work, about to consume what only the work can earn.
