The Numinous Officer received the command, went out of the hall to make his inquiries everywhere, learned the whole of it in detail, and returned to report: 'The one who threw the Heavenly Palace into confusion is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven.'

The Jade Emperor, in great wrath, at once dispatched the Four Great Heavenly Kings, together with the Heavenly King Li and Prince Nezha, to muster the Twenty-Eight Mansions, the Nine Luminary star-officers, the Twelve Horary Branches, the Jiedi of the Five Quarters, the Merit-officers of the Four Watches, the eastern and western star-lords, the gods of north and south, the Five Peaks and Four Watercourses, and the star-host of all heaven — a hundred thousand celestial troops in all — to spread eighteen frames of sky-net and earth-snare, go down to the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, beleaguer it, and be sure to seize that wretch for punishment.

天羅地網: the "sky-net and earth-snare," an inescapable encircling cordon.

總評 Commentary

With the culprit named — 攪亂天宮者,乃齊天大聖也 — the order moves from inquiry to force. The Jade Emperor’s muster is staggering in scale: the Four Kings, Li and Nezha, the Twenty-Eight Mansions, the Nine Luminaries, the Horary Branches, the Jiedi, the Five Peaks and Four Watercourses — a hundred thousand troops and an eighteen-fold 天羅地網 to take one monkey. The disproportion is deliberate, and the next passage’s 賦 will spell it out.

In the inner-alchemical register, the mobilized cosmos is the self’s own disordered energies risen against the unstilled 心猿. The havoc the mind made in seizing the elixir now returns upon it as massed force; the discipline it would not impose on itself is about to be imposed from without. The lead-in 但見那 opens onto the marshalled host.
