總評 Commentary

Sobered by the elixir, the 心猿 at last grasps the scale of what it has done — 這場禍比天還大 ("this calamity is bigger than heaven itself") — but the response is again flight, not repentance: 不如下界為王去也. The pattern of the whole sequence holds to its end: at each theft the mind registers the danger and reasons only about escape; not once does it reconsider the taking. This is the unrefined mind-monkey exactly — quick, clever, alive to consequence, and wholly without the self-correction that cultivation would install.

The return to the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit closes the heavenly arc and reopens the earthly one. The drilling host (演習武藝) and the captains’ easy welcome restore Monkey to the one place where his rank is real — among beings who answer to him. His airy "not long at all" (沒多時), to followers who have missed him for what was, in heaven’s reckoning, a span of years, sets up the next passage’s play on the gulf between celestial and mortal time. The mind that could win no seat in heaven resumes its throne below.
