The second fiend carried him inside and said: “Brother, I've brought him.” The old fiend said: “Whom have you brought?” The second fiend said: “Che the Pilgrim — I've bottled him in the gourd.” The old fiend said with delight: “Worthy brother, sit down. Don't move it; only wait till it sloshes when shaken, then peel off the seal.”

裝在葫蘆裡也 zhuāng zài hú lu lǐ yě, bottled in the gourd. The test is stated plainly enough for Wukong to hear and work with: 只等搖得響再揭帖兒 zhǐ děng yáo de xiǎng zài jiē tiě er, wait until it sloshes when shaken, then peel off the seal — the how-well de and the diminutive er, and 帖 read tiě, a slip of paper, not the tiē that means pasting one on. A captive who has liquefied makes a noise; a captive who has not, does not.

行xíng者zhě聽tīng得de道dào:「我wǒ這zhè般bān一yí個gè身shēn子zi,怎zěn麼me便biàn搖yáo得de響xiǎng? 行xíng者zhě听tīng得de道dào:「我wǒ这zhè般bān一yí个gè身shēn子zi,怎zěn么me便biàn摇yáo得de响xiǎng?

Pilgrim heard this and thought: “A whole body like mine — how could it slosh when shaken? Only if I melted to a thin broth would it slosh. Let me piss out a puddle; when it sloshes for him, he'll surely lift the seal and raise the lid, and I'll take the chance and clear off — damn him.”

才搖得響是 cái yáo de xiǎng shì, only then would it slosh. 撒泡溺罷 sā pào niào ba, let me piss out a puddle — 溺 read niào here, standing in for the ordinary word for urine, not the nì that means drowning; the coaxing ba makes it a proposal to himself. 我乘空走他娘罷 wǒ chéng kōng zǒu tā niáng ba, take the opening and clear off, with an expletive in the middle that is coarser in Chinese than most translations let on.

Then he thought again: “No, no. Piss might slosh, but it would only foul this cassock. When he shakes it, I'll just gather up some spittle and rinse my mouth, and with a thin sloshing gurgle trick him into lifting it — then Old Monkey clears off.”

污了這直裰 wū le zhè zhí duō, foul this cassock — a 直裰 is the long straight-cut robe of a monk, and the objection is fastidious rather than practical. 聚些唾津漱口 jù xiē tuò jīn shù kǒu, gather some spittle and rinse the mouth. 稀漓呼喇的 xī lí hū lǎ de is pure sound: a thin, gurgling slosh, counterfeiting the noise a dissolved body would make.

總評 Commentary

The demons' test rests on the same folklore as the melting: the captive is judged dissolved when the shaken vessel sloshes. The old fiend's patient instruction — don't move it, wait for the sound — sets Wukong exactly the problem this passage is built to solve. He must counterfeit the very dissolution he has just finished assuring himself he need not fear.

The comedy is scatological and self-correcting, and it opens a small window on Wukong's fastidiousness. His first scheme, to piss a puddle so the gourd will slosh, is rejected not on any grounds of danger but because it would foul his cassock, and the refined substitute is a mouthful of spittle worked into a convincing gurgle. That the indestructible Great Sage, having faced down the fear of melting, should pause over the dignity of his robe is a fine human touch — and the plan he settles on turns the demons' own test into the instrument of his escape.
