In no time they reached the mouth of Lotus-Flower Cave, and the hair-conjured imps in front called out: “Open the gate! Open the gate!” A gate-keeping imp within opened it and said: “Are Mountain-Straddling Tiger and Sea-Reclining Dragon back?” The hairs said: “We're back.” “And Grandma, whom you went to invite?” The hairs pointed with their hands: “Isn't that her in the sedan?”

The gatekeeper's question is answered by a pointing finger and a rhetorical shrug: 那轎內的不是 nà jiào nèi de bù shì, isn't that her in the sedan — the points, and the whole force of the retort sits in 不是, a negative doing the work of a challenge.

The little fiend said: “Wait a moment; let me go in and announce it first.” He reported: “Great Kings, Grandma has come.” Hearing this, the two demon lords at once ordered an incense-table set out to receive her.

先報 xiān bào, announce first — the gatekeeper is being conscientious, and his conscientiousness is what admits the assassin with full honours. 即命排香案來接 jí mìng pái xiāng àn lái jiē, at once ordered an incense-table set out to receive her: the altar of formal welcome due a mother, made ready for an impostor.

總評 Commentary

The return through the gate mirrors the earlier passage in reverse. Where Wukong once talked his way past a single female gatekeeper, he now sweeps in as the mistress herself, borne by a procession of his own hairs who answer for him at the door. The gate-imp's dutiful pause — 等我進去先報, let me go in and announce it first — is the machinery of a well-run household turned against its masters.

The brothers' response finishes baiting the trap. Told that Mother has come, they order an incense-table set out to receive her with ceremony, and the reader watches the demons prepare, in perfect filial earnest, exactly the honours Wukong schemed to collect. The whole apparatus of reverence — announcement, altar, reception — is being readied for a fraud, and the fiends' own piety is the instrument of their gulling.
