Here, unable to bear the bitterness, unable to bear the scorching, unable to endure the cold, unable to stomach the water and soil — some six or seven hundred died, and seven or eight hundred took their own lives.

Four things in a row that could not be endured, each in the same shape: the hardship, the scorching, the cold, and the water and soil. That last is 服不得水土 — men from elsewhere failing to acclimatize, a real and recognized way to die on a Ming road. in all four is the light de of the "cannot manage it" pattern; in 自盡 is jìn.

總評 Commentary

The screw turns once more. Of some two thousand monks, six or seven hundred died of the conditions and seven or eight hundred by their own hand; the five hundred who remain are denied even that exit, and every attempt at it fails.

Wukong's mock congratulation on their 長壽, long life, draws the bitterest line in the chapter. You have left out a character, they tell him: it is 長受罪, long punishment. The same two syllables open both, so the correction arrives as wordplay and lands as a life sentence — and it opens onto the question of who, exactly, is keeping them alive.
