Pilgrim said: "In this city there is indeed a Three-Pure Abbey, where the Daoists are at their jiao-rite, and on the Three-Pure altar are many offerings: steamed buns a full dǒu across, roast pastries fifty or sixty catties apiece, side-dishes beyond count, and fruits fresh and new.

The inventory is aimed squarely at a pig, and it is all size. A is a grain measure of roughly ten liters, so a bun "a full dǒu across" is the size of a bucket; the 燒果, baked pastries, run to fifty or sixty catties apiece, a catty being about six hundred grams. A — more usually written — is a Daoist offering-rite, the kind now in progress. is guàn twice, the abbey; in 供養 is gòng, offerings laid before a god, not the gōng of supplying goods; is shù; is before and .

He slept through his own name and woke at the word "eat." 帶挈, to take someone along with you and cut them in. is ; is the light er; is before .

Pilgrim said: "Little brother, if you want to eat, don't shout and yell and wake the master — all of you follow me."

One condition only, and it marks the whole expedition as a boys' escapade: do not wake the master. 大呼小叫, hollering and yelling, is still exactly what a Chinese parent says to a noisy child. is before ; is dōu.

總評 Commentary

The bait is aimed and it lands exactly where aimed. Bajie sleeps through Sha Monk being woken and comes round instantly at "good things to eat," and his first words are a plea not to be left out.

Wukong's inventory is all scale — buns the size of a bucket, pastries by the fifty catties, side-dishes past counting — and his one condition marks the whole thing as a schoolboy raid: do not wake the master. The three set off, and the chapter's closing sequence begins.
