逐句解 Line by line
Around the second watch, the Great Sage Sun, with matters on his mind, could not sleep for anything, and only heard, from somewhere, the sound of pipes and drums.
A 更 is a night-watch, one of five between dusk and dawn, so the second watch is somewhere around ten at night. 更 is gēng, not the gèng that means "even more." 著 in 睡不著 is zháo, the hitting-the-mark reading — to try to sleep and fail to land it; because zháo rises, 不 stays bù. 那裡 is vague here, 那 as nǎ, "from somewhere"; 中 is zhōng; 得 is the light de.
Quietly he crept up, put on his clothes, sprang into the air to look, and found it was to the south that lamps and candles blazed.
He gets dressed before flying, which is a nice small touch. 熒煌, blazing. 中 is zhōng; 觀 is guān and 看 is kàn.
Lowering his cloud to look more closely, he saw it was the Daoists of the Three-Pure Abbey performing a star-propitiation rite.
A 禳星 is a rite to turn away a bad star — Chinese astrology assigns each person and each year a governing star, and when the wrong one is in charge you petition it away. Here the whole abbey is up at midnight doing it. 觀 in 三清觀 is guàn, the abbey — note it against the guān of "look" in the line just above. 仔 is zǐ, not the zǎi it reads in other words; 哩 is li.
Wakeful at the second watch with business on his mind, Wukong hears music, gets dressed, flies up, and finds the whole abbey at a 禳星 — a rite for turning away an unlucky star — in the very 三清觀 whose building bewitched the king.
The staging is deliberate. Midnight, candles, solemn ceremony, and a rhapsody coming to render all of it at full height, so that what the pilgrims do next lands as farce against a backdrop of serious liturgy.
