從新教導 Training a New Sha Monk
Line by line
That Pilgrim was enraged. He whirled up the gold-banded rod, led the monkeys on, and had Sha Monk surrounded.
帥眾猴 uses 帥 as a verb, to lead troops. It is the vocabulary of command rather than of a brawl, and it tells you how the cave is now organised.
Sha Monk charged east and battered west, fought his way out at the mouth of the path, and mounting cloud and mist made his escape, saying: “This wretched monkey is past all bearing. I shall go and lay it before the Bodhisattva.”
東沖西撞 is a four-character formula for fighting free in every direction at once. 憊懶 -- worn out and shameless, and so past all decency -- is the strongest word Sha Monk uses in the whole chapter, and he uses it while running away.
That Pilgrim, seeing that Sha Monk had killed a monkey-spirit and that the Sha Monk had been forced to flee, did not come after him.
逼得走了 takes 得 as the link hanging a consequence off the verb, de. The refusal to give chase is the coldest detail in the passage: he has what he needs, and the intruder no longer figures in the calculation.
He went back into the cave and had the little ones drag the dead monster's carcass to one side, skin it, take the flesh and fry it, and bring out coconut wine and grape wine, and he and the troop of monkeys ate it all together.
剝 is bō, the literary reading, which is the only one recorded here. 椰子 takes 子 as the worn-down ending, zi. The feast is reported in exactly the same flat tone as the frying: the monkeys eat one of their own and the narrator does not pause.
Then he picked out another demon monkey skilled in transformation, had him change into a Sha Monk once more, and set about training him afresh, meaning to go west; and of this no more.
還變一個沙和尚 takes 還 at hái, again. 從新教導 takes 教 at jiào. 不題 is the storyteller's formula for setting a thread down, the second such moment in the chapter after Wukong was left standing at Potalaka.
The fight takes two segments and the aftermath takes three, which is the right proportion: what happens after the fight is the point. The false king does not pursue. He has the rescript, he has a plan with a date on it, and a fleeing disciple is simply not part of the calculation.
The feast is the coldest stroke in the chapter. The dead counterfeit is skinned, fried and eaten by the troop with coconut and grape wine, and the narrator does not pause over it. These are monkeys eating a monkey; the figure who ordered it is wearing the shape of the Monkey King. Nothing in the sentence flags any of that.
And then he simply picks another one and starts the training over. 從新教導 -- teach him from the beginning again -- treats a person as a part to be replaced from stock, which is the same logic that produced the counterfeit party in the first place. The chapter sets the thread down here, and the imposture is running on schedule.
