行者道:「不消赶他了,这怪想是河中之物。
Pilgrim said: 「No need to chase him — this monster must be a creature of the river.
河中: 中 is zhōng. 不消 is everyday speech for "no need to." Wukong has already read the creature's nature off two fallen scales, and mentions it as if it were obvious.
且待明日設法拿他,送我師父過河。」
且待明日设法拿他,送我师父过河。」
Wait for tomorrow and we will contrive a way to take him and see our master over the water.」
設法, to contrive a means. And the chapter's real problem is stated right here, in six characters: not the demon, the crossing.
八戒依言,徑回廟裡,把那豬羊祭醴,連桌面一齊搬到陳家。
八戒依言,径回庙里,把那猪羊祭醴,连桌面一齐搬到陈家。
Eight Rules did as he said, went straight back to the temple, and carried the pigs, the sheep and the sacrificial wine, table and all, over to the Chen house.
把那豬羊 is nà. 一齊 keeps 一 at yì before the rising tone of 齊. Note what Eight Rules does with the sacrifice: the food comes home with him.
此時唐長老、沙和尚,共陳家兄弟,正在廳中候信,忽見他二人將豬羊等物都丟在天井裡。
此时唐长老、沙和尚,共陈家兄弟,正在厅中候信,忽见他二人将猪羊等物都丢在天井里。
At that hour the Tang Elder and Sha Monk, with the Chen brothers, were waiting in the hall for word, when of a sudden they saw the two of them dump the pigs and sheep and the rest of it down in the courtyard.
唐長老: 長 is zhǎng, "elder." 廳中: 中 is zhōng. 將 is jiāng; 都 is dōu, "all."
三藏迎來問道:「悟空,祭賽之事何如?」
三藏迎来问道:「悟空,祭赛之事何如?」
Tripitaka came out to meet them and asked: 「Wukong, how went the business of the sacrifice?」
三藏: 藏 is zàng.
行者將那稱名趕怪鑽入河中之事,說了一遍。
行者将那称名赶怪钻入河中之事,说了一遍。
Pilgrim told over the whole affair — the giving of the names, the chasing of the monster, his diving into the river.
將 is jiāng; 那 is nà. 稱名: 稱 is chēng, "to state, to name." 說了一遍 lifts 一 to yí before the falling tone of 遍.
二老十分歡喜,即命打掃廂房,安排床鋪,請他師徒就寢不題。
二老十分欢喜,即命打扫厢房,安排床铺,请他师徒就寝不题。
The two old men were greatly delighted and gave orders at once to sweep out the side rooms and make up the beds, and invited master and disciples to their rest; of which no more.
床鋪: 鋪 is pù, the noun — bedstead, bedding. This is the one place in the chapter where that reading is right; the two later appearances of the character are the verb pū, to spread out.
總評 Commentary
A short passage of housekeeping doing three jobs at once. It gets the sacrifice off the altar and into the Chen kitchen, which answers the villagers' problem practically and Eight Rules' comically. And it gives Wukong the line that identifies the enemy — 這怪想是河中之物, this creature must belong to the river — a deduction resting entirely on two scales knocked loose a page earlier.
Then it states the chapter's real difficulty in six characters: 送我師父過河, get our master across the water. The demon can be driven off. The river cannot. From here to the end, every move by either side is about the crossing, and the demon's answer — freeze the water into a road — will turn the obstacle itself into the trap.
