In the end there is no knowing how the handing down went once they were back in the Land of the East; listen, and the next chapter will explain.
⚠ 且聽下回分解 — listen and the next chapter will explain it. This is the storyteller's own closing formula, and every chapter of this novel ends on it. It is the voice of a man in a market who wants you back tomorrow. ⚠ 怎生傳授 — how the handing down was managed. And that is a real question, not a formula: the scriptures are on the horse, the pilgrims are in the air, and what happens when five thousand scrolls reach a country the Buddha has just called ignorant and unawakened is exactly what has not been settled. ⚠ The chapter ends eight days short of its own arithmetic, with its hero flying in the wrong direction and a decree still to be handed back.
The formula that closes every chapter of this novel, doing its ordinary work. But the question it asks this time is not decorative. The scriptures are loaded, the pilgrims are airborne, and what nobody has settled is what happens when five thousand scrolls arrive in a country their author has just described as ignorant and unawakened.
It is a strange place to leave a hundred chapters of walking. The journey is eight days short of its own cargo. The man who was told this morning that he must go by the real road is flying. The wordless scriptures — the better ones, by the Buddha's own account — are back on the shelf. And the decree that started it all in Chapter 8 is still waiting to be handed in.
