The old dragon pressed him hard to stay, in vain; and now the dragon-daughter brought tea to offer.

The 龍女, the dragon-daughter, appears for exactly one clause to carry in the tea and is never mentioned again.

Pilgrim drank a single cup of fragrant tea standing, took leave of the old dragon, and led forth troops with Moang, quitting the Western Sea and soon reaching the Black-Water River.

立飲, to drink standing up. He takes the cup without sitting down - refusing the hospitality while accepting the courtesy, which is a precise piece of manners and entirely deliberate.

Pilgrim said, "Worthy prince, take good care to catch the fiend; I shall go up onto the bank."

And then he hands the fight to somebody else and goes ashore. For Pilgrim this is remarkable restraint; he does not throw a punch anywhere in this chapter.

Moang said, "Set your mind at ease, Great Sage. Your little dragon will take him and bring him up to see you first, punish him for his crime, and send your master up before I dare carry him back to the sea to face my father."

小龍子 - "your little dragon" - is Moang copying his father's humble self-reference. He also sets out the order of business before starting: capture, present, punish, release the master, and only then take the prisoner home.

Pilgrim gladly parted from him, made the water-repelling sign, leapt out through the waves, and came straight to the eastern shore.

波津 pairs the waves with the crossing-place, a compound for the water's surface. The same hand sign that let him in lets him out.

沙shā僧sēng與yǔ那nà河hé神shén迎yíng著zhe道dào:「師shī兄xiōng,你nǐ去qù時shí從cóng空kōng而ér去qù,怎zěn麼me回huí來lái卻què自zì河hé內nèi而ér回huí?」 沙shā僧sēng与yǔ那nà河hé神shén迎yíng着zhe道dào:「师shī兄xiōng,你nǐ去qù时shí从cóng空kōng而ér去qù,怎zěn么me回huí来lái却què自zì河hé内nèi而ér回huí?」

Sha Monk and the river-god came to meet him: "Brother, you went off through the air — how is it you have come back out of the river instead?"

Sha Monk notices the change of element - you left through the air and came back out of the river - and the question exists so that the summary can follow.

Pilgrim recounted in full the matter of killing the fish-spirit, getting the note, calling the Dragon-King to account, and coming with the prince and his troops.

The third and last of Pilgrim's full recountings. All three are his, and each one closes off a stretch of action that he alone was present for.

Sha Monk was overjoyed, and they all stood on the bank to await the master.

不題, "of this we say no more" - the storyteller putting the bank aside to follow the fight underwater. It answers the 且不題 near the opening of the chapter.

總評 Commentary

Pilgrim drinks one cup standing, declines the banquet, and comes back with the prince and five hundred troops. The small gesture of drinking without sitting down is doing real work: he accepts the courtesy and refuses the hospitality, which keeps the pardon a favour rather than a bargain.

What follows is more unusual than it looks. Pilgrim hands the fighting to Moang and climbs out onto the bank to wait. In a book where he normally insists on doing everything himself, he spends this entire chapter as a prosecutor rather than a combatant - and he is content to let the family discipline its own.
